Big News!

It is the intent of the United Montessori Schools of Indiana Board of Directors to help guide individuals in

receiving credit for Montessori credentials. There are two options:

  • Individuals who already hold an Indiana state teachers license may add MACTE Montessori

credentials to their existing license by paying a nominal fee and registering through the Indiana

Department of Education. www.doe.in.gov/licensing (using your existing or created LVIS

account)

  • Individuals who hold a Bachelor’s degree in any field and a MACTE Montessori credential must

FIRST take AND PASS the Indiana CORE Exam; either the Early Childhood Generalist Exam

(MACTE Early Childhood Montessori Credential) or the Elementary Generalist Exam (Elementary

I, Elementary II, or Elementary I-II MACTE Montessori Credential). There are subject area exams

that are also required. Passing scores are necessary to be considered for licensure. Candidates

will then apply for the appropriate Indiana state teachers’ license.

It is our understanding that most individuals that have a Bachelor’s degree in an area other than

education and a Montessori credential may be lacking skills in the areas of special needs students,

assessment, and ESL/ELL (English as a Second Language/English Language Learners). It is our

understanding that extra study may be necessary in these areas before taking the CORE exam.

We are currently seeking individuals who are Indiana licensed teachers (Montessori credentialed) who

would be willing to mentor a teacher wanting to take the CORE exam. For more information please

contact a member of the UMSI Board of Directors or email us at umsindiana@gmail.com.
