Montessori Credential Recognition

A Montessori credential, in addition to a Bachelor’s Degree, is an alternative path to teacher licensure. Candidates must still complete all required exams.

Licensed teachers who have a Montessori credential can apply to have an endorsement added to their license.

Exceptions and Waivers for Childcare Licensure

Montessori organizations recommend higher student/teacher ratios than current state legislation. One step toward compromise was passed in 2022. This rule recognizes the nature of multi-age classrooms found in Montessori schools and allows staffing based on the AVERAGE AGE in a classroom on January 1 (vs. the youngest child in the room) in 3-6 year old classrooms.

UMSI Census Survey

UMSI coordinates a Montessori School Census Survey, creating a comprehensive count of Montessori schools in the state.  By showing legislators that their constituents want Montessori, we can increase access to Montessori programs for Indiana families and create a unified voice in our state. Complete the Census survey here.
